FAQs about starting a business in Portugal.

Do I need to be a Portuguese citizen or resident to open a company?

Open

Not at all! Any foreign national (whether resident or non-resident) can incorporate and fully own a company in Portugal under the exact same terms as a local. You do not need a Portuguese partner. The only initial requirement is obtaining a Portuguese Tax Number (NIF), which our team handles for you completely remotely.

Do I need to travel to Portugal to set up my company?

Open

You don't. The entire incorporation process can be handled 100% remotely. By granting a Power of Attorney (Procuração) to our legal team, we can secure your tax numbers, draft the articles of association, and fully register your company without you ever needing to board a plane.

What is a NIF, and why do I need one?

Open

A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's 9-digit tax identification number. It is the absolute starting point for any business or personal transaction in the country. You will need a NIF to open a corporate bank account, sign legal contracts, register a company, and fulfill tax obligations. As part of our service, we secure your NIF before starting the incorporation process.

What is a Fiscal Representative, and when do I need one?

Open

A Fiscal Representative acts as your official legal liaison with the Portuguese Tax Authority (Finanças), ensuring all official communications and tax notices are received and handled on time. If you reside outside the European Union (EU) or EEA, appointing a local fiscal representative is legally mandatory to obtain your Portuguese Tax Number (NIF) and start a business.

What is the minimum share capital required to start a Limited Liability Company (Lda.)?

Open

Technically, Portuguese law allows you to set up a standard Lda. with a minimum share capital of just €1 per shareholder. However, to build initial corporate credibility with local banks, suppliers, and partners, we generally recommend establishing a more realistic initial working capital (such as €1,000 to €5,000).

Does starting a business in Portugal qualify me for a residency visa (like the D2 Visa)?

Open

Yes, absolutely. Incorporating a company in Portugal is the core requirement for the D2 Immigrant Entrepreneur Visa. To qualify, you must show a solid business plan, demonstrate the economic/social relevance of your project, and prove you have sufficient investment capital. Our integrated team of tax, legal, and business specialists can assist you with both the company setup and the visa preparation.
